DUI Auto Insurance

Driving under the influence of alcohol is the single most dangerous thing that a driver can do behind the wheel of a car. Drunk driving accidents are responsible for more deaths than any other type of car accident today. This single act can cost the life of the driver and it can also cost the lives of all others involved in the accident. In an effort to stop drunk driving, drinking and driving laws have become stricter over the last several years. This means drunk drivers can serve serious jail time, have their licenses suspended for life, and their finances and credit may suffer tremendously as a result of hefty fines, fees, and expensive lawsuits.

Fortunately, not all drunk driving cases are hopeless. While their actions are still considered reckless and dangerous, some drunk drivers may be offered a second chance depending on the severity of the case. In these cases, the state will require SR22 auto insurance-also sometimes referred to as DUI auto insurance or DUI insurance. An insurance company issues an SR22 auto insurance policy. SR22 or DUI auto insurance is required for reinstatement of the offender's driver's license after it has been suspended or revoked.

SR22 auto insurance is unique because the insurance company will notify the department of motor vehicles if the policyholder's auto insurance policy lapses or if it is cancelled or terminated. This means the policyholder cannot hide. In case of a lapse, notification, called an SR-26 filing, is required.

In some states, drivers will have to carry SR22 auto insurance for up to three consecutive years before their driver's license is fully reinstated. Because of the crackdown on drunk driving, this three-year period may be extended for up to five years or more. If the SR22 or DUI auto insurance policy cancels for any reason, the policyholder will have to start the three-year period over again, starting at day one. This means that the amount of time the policyholder has already carried the insurance will be lost.
