Does Auto Insurance Cover the Vehicle, the Driver, or Both?

When you get auto insurance, are you insuring the vehicle, the driver, or both? How do you know? - James P

Usually, it is primarily the vehicle that is insured, under parameters that the policyholder tells the insurer who drives the vehicle and for what purposes (home, school, work, leisure).  But the answer to your question would be more fully contained within the pages of your own policy.  Some policies state that the insured(s) are covered when driving another vehicle other than the insured vehicle, indicating that it is the driver who is insured.  Others exclude coverage while you are driving other vehicles, hinting that it is your car that is insured. Most policies will cover someone who borrows your car with your permission, so, again, the policy is following the car.  To be sure, it varies from one policy to the next, and by degree, but generally speaking, both the car and the driver are insured.
